In a report however it's normal to put in the currency. $ million or $'000 so it's not an issue, you just put the brackets around the number. In a set of accounts, the currrency and size of the number are usually at the top of the column e.g. No idea which is right since I have never lost marks for displaying it either way. All of my accounting/finance textbooks do it like option 3 $(1.1m), but Excel puts everything inside.
